Long Term Pain
Long term pain, also known as chronic pain, is ongoing trauma that has lasting consequences and conditions on the body.
According to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, over 100 million people in the United States live with chronic pain conditions. In some cases, people develop long term pain without any pinpoint of previous injury, but typically, chronic pain develops from previous injuries or pre-existing conditions.
Although long term pain is as equal to any other type of workplace injury, it’s also the most challenging to defend when seeking workers’ compensation benefits. It’s very common for employers to doubt or deny chronic pain claims because it could be from a pre-existing condition unrelated to an employee’s job or work environment. That’s why it’s essential to document medical tests and histories when applying for workers’ compensation in this circumstance. As long as long term pain began after a work-related injury, or if it’s pre-existing and worsened after performing work duties, employees are able to receive workers’ compensation benefits.
Chronic Pain Disability Benefits
Employees suffering from long term pain are entitled to disability benefits under North Carolina and South Carolina workers’ compensation law. If approved for total disability benefits, which recognizes that an employee is permanently disabled and cannot go back to work, the employee may expect to receive weekly payments for life. This is determined by several factors that are determined by the North Carolina and South Carolina Industrial Commission.
Common Long Term Pain Conditions
- Facial pain
- Headaches and migraines
